The Royal Collections

The Royal Palace houses a number of collections, including paintings, sculptures and silver objects. There is an ongoing effort to catalogue and document the items in these collections.

Descriptions of and background information on selected items will be available on the website, and more items will gradually be added.

In 1982, Andy Warhol produced several portraits of Her Majesty Queen Sonja in connection with the then Crown Princess' visit to his studio in New York.

This table clock is shaped like a Gothic cathedral. It was purchased between 1846 and 1848 expressly for the Bird Room.

This version of Grandmother’s Bridal Crown was painted by Adolph Tidemand in 1869, commissioned as a wedding gift for Princess Louise.
Gustavian commode
This commode was craftet ca 1785 in the workshop of Georg Haupt. Haupt was instrumental in establishing the Gustavian style of furniture.

The urn from the “Norwegians in Shanghai” was a gift to the king in connection with the coronation in 1906.

This painting was part of King Oscar II’s “dynastic programme” - a sign of his legitimacy as union monarch.

In 1929 Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha received a pair of silver candelabra as a wedding gift from the Norwegian Government.

The Warwick urns
The English people gave Queen Maud a magnificent table service in honour of her coronation in 1906. The set is still used for banquets at the Royal Palace.

The painting was one of the first gifts to the new King and Queen on their arrival in Norway in 1905, and was hung in Queen Maud’s Salon at the Royal Palace.
