His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon

Crown Prince Haakon was born on 20 July 1973, and has one sister, Her Highness Princess Märtha Louise. The Crown Prince married Miss Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby in Oslo Cathedral on 25 August 2001.


There are three children in the Crown Prince and Crown Princess’s family: Marius Borg Høiby, Her Royal Highness Princess Ingrid Alexandra and His Highness Prince Sverre Magnus.

Education

The Crown Prince completed his upper secondary education at Kristelig Gymnasium in Oslo in 1992, and in 1995 he graduated from the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy in Bergen. In autumn 1996 he moved to the USA to study at the University of California at Berkeley, and received his BA in political science in spring 1999. The following autumn the Crown Prince was a member of Norway’s third delegation to the UN General Assembly. In 2001 he followed the Foreign Ministry’s trainee programme for diplomats, and completed his education in 2003 at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he was awarded an MA in development studies, specializing in international trade and Africa.

Official duties

In 2003 the Crown Prince was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for UNDP with a particular focus on the UN Millennium Development Goals. In this capacity he has travelled to Tanzania, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Guatemala, Burundi, Mongolia and Botswana.

The Crown Prince is an active member of Young Global Leaders (YGL), a forum under the auspices of the World Economic Forum. One of the results of efforts under the YGL is the Global Dignity initiative, which was launched by the Crown Prince together with John Hope Bryant (founder and chairman of Operation Hope) of the US and professor Pekka Himanen of Finland.

The Crown Prince carries out a wide variety of official engagements in Norway. He is the patron of a number of organisations, including the Norwegian International Film Festival, the Norwegian Association against Substance Abuse and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.

Leisure interests

The Crown Prince has many leisure interests, including winter sports, water sports, film, literature and music. The Crown Prince and Crown Princess have an active family life and spend a great deal of time with their young children enjoying indoor and outdoor recreational activities, including sport and cultural activities.
