Practical information for the media

Practical information for members of the media who wish to cover the events taking place in connection with the death of King Harald.

Information for the press

  • All information relating to the death of King Harald and the subsequent events will be published and updated on an ongoing basis on the kongehuset.no website under the tabs “For the press” or “Current”, respectively. Notifications about new information will be provided through our news subscription service.
  • In the course of the next few days, more detailed information will be provided on the kongehuset.no website about key events, such as the oath of allegiance ceremony in the Storting, other ceremonial events and the funeral.
  • Information meetings for members of the press will be held at regular intervals by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and information on the timing of these meetings will be published on the regjeringen.no website and the kongehuset.no website. All information meetings will take place in the press centre established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Please note that these information meetings will not be an opportunity for interviews. They are solely meant to provide practical information.

  • It is not possible to send text messages to the press telephone, but emails will be answered on an ongoing basis.
  • Please note that enquiries submitted through other channels will not be given priority.

We kindly ask all members of the media to consult our webpages at kongehuset.no, or the government webpages at regjeringen.no for information first, before contacting The Royal Court directly.

Access to the Palace Square

The Palace Square is open to all members of the media wishing to cover the events from there. All media representatives present in the Palace Square are asked to follow the instructions given by members of the King’s Guard and the Royal Court staff.

The following rules apply:

  • There are no restrictions on press photography by the media other than directions issued by the police and the King's Guard.
  • Certain areas of the Palace Square have been specially designated for live broadcasts and interviews. Members of the media are requested to limit their live broadcasts to just these areas so as not to obstruct pedestrian access. The main area for live broadcasts and interviews is located on the southern side of the Palace Square, facing Henriks Ibsens gate, and will be clearly marked. Information about additional live broadcast areas will be published on the kongehuset.no website as they are established.
  • The main area for live broadcasts (on the southern side of the Square, facing Henrik Ibsens gate) will be equipped with power supply. To access electricity from the power distribution cabinet, media representatives will need to bring an outdoor-rated extension lead.
  • Media representatives are required to provide their own internet access.

Accreditation

  • All members of the media wishing to cover the events from the Palace Square must present a valid press card / other relevant identification that proves they are participating as representatives of the press. No press accreditation is required for press coverage from the Palace Square except on the day of the funeral.
  • On the day of the funeral, members of the media will be directed to the dedicated press area in the Palace Square. Applications for accreditation for this are to be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Traffic access and parking

  • The Queen’s Park will be closed to all traffic that is not approved in advance.
  • It will not be permitted to park any vehicles in the Palace Square or the Palace Park.
  • Parking permission on the grounds of the Royal Palace will only be granted to those with prior authorisation. This will primarily be reserved for those taking part in the media pool. Permission will only apply in connection with previously agreed activities and not for any other forms of media coverage. All parking permission must be agreed on in advance to gain access to the area.

Media pool

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and NTB will provide still photos and video footage in connection with the various events related to the King’s death. Members of the media are asked to contact NRK and NTB directly for information about the digital feed and other details regarding when images and sound links will be available.
