Norwegian Refugee Council 75th Anniversary

Dear all staff of NRC - all around the world:
Congratulations on your 75-year anniversary!

The Norwegian Refugee Council has a long and proud history. A history which is built on maybe some of the most noble things we all share: a wish – an instinct – to help human beings who are in need. Through your work, you do this every day.

75 years ago, the second world war had just come to an end. Many people were in need. Despite a difficult situation in Norway, Norwegian women and men mobilized to support people in other parts of Europe who had lost even more. This was the backdrop of the establishment of “The Europe Aid”, the predecessor to NRC.

And this is the heritage you build upon today.

As patron to NRC, I am always proud to meet the staff of NRC around the world. I am especially impressed to see how you meet people in extremely difficult situations: with genuine compassion and a high degree of professionalism – with trust, wisdom and warmth. It makes a deep impression on me knowing that many of you live in very challenging circumstances yourselves – assisting your fellow countrymen in conflict areas.

I am also really impressed by how NRC works on multiple levels: from local councils in rural areas to the highest level of global politics. From direct human-to-human assistance, to relentlessly working to advocate for the rights of people forced to flee.

The work of NRC and other humanitarian organizations is still as needed today as it was 75 years ago. But the good thing is, that NRC has only grown stronger over the years. Today, you are probably more able to deliver than ever before. This gives you great possibilities, but also a great responsibility. A responsibility I know you take very seriously.

On your 75th anniversary, I want to congratulate each and every one of you. Thank you for the great humanitarian effort you do for people who have been forced to flee their homes – and for showing solidarity, through action, on behalf of us all.
